Built around your writing

Spleen is a calm writing app for longer projects. It keeps drafts, notes and research close, without crowding the page.

Free to start. No card, no end date.

What’s in the workspace

All of it from your first project, with nothing to install or configure.

Notes

Notes beside the page

Every document has a panel beside it for the thinking around the text. Open it when you need it, and close it when you want the page to yourself.

  • Notes. Questions, facts to check and ideas for later, kept with the document they belong to.
  • Annotations. Select a passage and pin a remark to it. The passage keeps a quiet highlight that opens the remark again.
  • Out of the way. Neither counts towards your words, and neither ever ends up in an export.

History

Every version kept

Spleen saves every few seconds as you write, and once an hour it also keeps a snapshot of the whole document. Nothing to remember and nothing to set up.

  • See what changed. Each snapshot shows how many words were added and removed since the one before.
  • Look before you restore. Open an earlier version in the editor first, and bring it back only if it is the one you want.
  • Change your mind. Restoring keeps the version you replaced as a snapshot too, so nothing is lost either way.

Anywhere

Carry on from your phone

Spleen runs in your phone’s browser, with nothing to install. Your projects are simply there, as you left them at your desk.

  • Made for a small screen. A writing toolbar sits above the keyboard, and the project tree and the side panel open as sheets.
  • Words kept safe. If the connection drops mid-sentence, what you typed is kept on the phone until it can be saved.
  • On your home screen. Add Spleen to your home screen and it opens like an app, straight into your projects.

  • Read aloud Hear the rhythm, catch what the eye skips.
  • Search Find any word, anywhere in the project.
  • Templates Start from a ready-made project structure.
  • Lock Keep a finished chapter exactly as it is.

Your writing stays yours

Spleen keeps your work, it does not keep you. Everything you write can leave with you, whole, whenever you like.

  • Take it anywhere

Every plan exports to PDF, EPUB, Markdown and HTML. The Library plan adds a Word manuscript and a print-ready PDF.

  • Keep a complete copy

A Spleen Archive holds a whole project, notes and snapshots included. The Library plan sends one to your Dropbox or Google Drive nightly.

  • Leave when you like

Download all of your data, or delete your account, from your account settings. Nothing to ask for, no one to write to.

The first writers

A few people have been writing in Spleen while it was being made. This is what they make of it, in their own words.

LL

Luba Luijks-Michalets

Writing a first novel

I keep my research in the same project as the chapters now, so I no longer lose an evening hunting for the one note I need.

B

Bogdan

Writing a thriller series

I start every book from the same template. The chapters are there before I write a word, and I move them around as the story takes shape.
